Our history
In 1879, a few old battle-scared Christians met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Henry, which was owned by Mrs. Mammie Braziel; they began to sing old Zion hymns and sent up supplications to the Almighty, trusting and hoping that someday they would have some place to congregate and sing praises. Very few people lived in Weimar, Tx at that time but they continued to carry on. These old soldiers were full of faith; they had the faith of Abraham. In that same year, Mount Arie Baptist Church was organized by these persons: Mr. and Mrs. Sam Henry, Mr. Sam Night, Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Bremby, Mrs. Chaney Dobbins, Mrs. Drue Sulla Long and Mrs. Dealie Washington. Week after week they met and had their prayer meeting; as time went on more were added to the group. They continued to pray and trust God until they had raised enough money to purchase the church lot.
In 1883, they decided they needed a Shepherd; the Reverend S.C. Smith was called. With his guidance, they raised enough money to build the first church, but were only able to get the frame up when a storm came and blew it down. They did not get discouraged, nor did they give up. They continued to work and pray and never failed to trust in God, and in 1884, they were able to start building again. This time the church was completed; it was completed in the latter part of 1884 under Pastor S.C. Smith which stands today as Mt. Arie Missionary Baptist Church. Our current Pastor took leadership September 2009.
In 2011, our current Pastor Dwight B. Davis, Sr., founded our new name Greater Mt. Arie Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Davis continues to work on strengthening our community outreach and has extended our service offerings to exemplify the ‘Greater’ in the name Greater Mt. Arie Missionary Baptist Church.
